illnesses

ICH-little white dots on fins and move slowly to body(dont confuse ich with sparkley scales on piranhas)  to treat, use 1 tbs of salt per every five gallons and raise temperature to 82

PLANERIA- you may notice little white worms about this>-< size on your glass. these are planeria, they are harmless to your fish but can be a major eyesore, they are formed by too much leftover meat in the tank.  to rid your tank of these, add a tbs of salt per every five gallons and they should be gone within an hour.

FIN ROT- this is commonly mixed up with fin bites, fin rot dosent look like a bite is taken out and has grey edges. this is a bacterial infection caused by poor water quality. to treat, remove carbon from your tank and use melafix as long as needed.

POP AND CLOUD EYE- this is again caused by bacteria in poor water quality. it is also treated with melafix untill it clears up.

INJURIES

FIN NIPS-very common but shouldnt always have them. to treat, just give them a week or two and it will completely be healed

CHIN BUMPS- this appears as a white bump on the piranhas chin and is very very common with new piranhas. it is from either new or stressed piranhas rubbing their chins against the glass too much. these will be gone a month after the piranhas stop rubbing against the walls.

FLESH WOUNDS- for all flesh wounds, the piranha should be put in a seperate tank or you should divide the tank off. next you should add a tbs of salt for every five gallons to make healing faster and relieve stress, and add melafix daily untill the wound is healed to prevent against bacterial infections. flesh wounds can take from less than a month to heal to many months. if the piranha is in severe condition and will never live a normal life again, and has been eaten from the tail down to the bone and 1/3 of it gone, you would be better off just euthenizing the fish. to do this, put it in a container of water and put it in the freezer. it is a painless way of death. what i did when one of my piranhas got murdered, i boiled it in water to get the jaws out as a memory. but its your choice.
